Alongside my work with clients, I am a tutor of hypnotherapy. It is a part of my work that I really value, because passing on knowledge and helping others develop their skills is its own kind of privilege. If you have been thinking about hypnotherapy training in St Albans, here are some thoughts that may help you decide on your next step.
Why learn hypnotherapy?
People come to hypnotherapy from all sorts of backgrounds. Some want a new career helping others. Some have experienced the benefits of therapy themselves and have become curious about how it works. Others are already practising as therapists or counsellors and want to widen the range of tools they can offer their clients.
Hypnotherapy is a fascinating field. It brings together an understanding of the mind with a warm and respectful way of working with people. Clinical hypnotherapy has nothing to do with stage shows. It is a calm, collaborative process in which the client stays aware and in control.
Who is tutoring for?
Hypnotherapy tutoring may suit you if you are:
- A new student who is thinking about training or just starting out
- A practising therapist who would like to add hypnotherapy to your work
- Someone looking for CPD who wants to keep your knowledge and skills up to date
What to look for in training
Choosing where to train is an important decision. Here are some questions worth asking of any course or tutor:
- What qualification will I gain? Find out who awards it and how it is recognised.
- Does it lead to professional membership? Check whether the course meets the requirements of the professional body you want to join.
- How much practical experience will I get? Hypnotherapy is a practical skill, so supervised practice is important.
- What is the tutor’s background? Is the tutor practising, and what is their training?
- How is it taught? Think about what format, pace and class size would suit the way you learn.
Learning from a practising therapist
My own background includes a BSc in Psychology, a Diploma in Hypnotherapy and Level 7 (Master’s level) training in Hypno-Psychotherapy. I am an accredited member of the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), and a member of the National Hypnotherapy Society and the National Society of Talking Therapies. I am also EMDR qualified, and I continue with regular professional development.
I still work with clients in my St Albans practice and online, offering hypnotherapy sessions and psychotherapy. That day-to-day experience naturally shapes how I think about teaching. Theory matters, but so does understanding what it is like to sit with another person and to respond to what they bring.
Is it right for you?
Good therapists come from many walks of life. Curiosity, empathy, patience and a willingness to reflect on yourself are all valuable starting points. Training can also be personally challenging at times, as working with others often leads us to think about our own experiences. It helps to go in with an open mind and good support around you.
If you are unsure, it may help to speak to someone already working in the field. Ask about the reality of the work, as well as what they find most rewarding. You might also consider what you hope to do with your training, whether that is setting up in private practice or adding to your existing work.
